‘School’s Out’ in North Carolina, sort of. Rocker Alice Cooper says so
“School’s Out” singer Alice Cooper is joining in on the gags surrounding North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper’s decision to keep schools closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The state announced the decision Friday, and a meme quickly emerged with Alice Cooper superimposed over Cooper at the press conference: “Gov. Cooper, announcing school will remain closed through summer,” it says.
Alice Cooper apparently spotted the so-called “governor meme” on social media and shared the photo Monday on Facebook and Twitter, wryly adding: “Well, we got no choice...”
Fans will recognize that as a line from his 1972 hit “School’s Out,” which remains an anthem for rebellious students.
His tweet has gotten more than 60,000 reactions, shares and comments, many from people quoting other lines from his song.
“I sing that song every year on the last day of school. I’m a teacher,” one person responded.
“I teach in South Carolina. As much as the news of schools being closed for the rest of the year broke my heart, this picture made me feel a little bit better. At least school’s out with style,” Mandi Nelligan tweeted.
There was at least one fact check on the singer’s tweet, which noted school is not technically out. The state still expects students to participate in virtual learning.
“Love this mashup, but school in NC is not out, just not in the building,” one tweet said. “Even if the schools have been blown to pieces, teachers are still trying to teach, and students should still be trying to learn. It’s a strange day with no more pencils and no more books or nasty looks.”
