High school teacher arrested after parent finds ‘inappropriate’ messages, NC cops say

A 30-year-old math teacher in North Carolina was arrested Friday on charges of taking indecent liberties with a student, according to local law enforcement.

She has since resigned, school officials said.

Elizabeth Lee Wright left her position at the Agriculture and Science Early College on North Iredell High School’s campus — about 50 miles north of Charlotte — on Monday, Boen Nutting, spokesperson for Iredell-Statesville Schools, told McClatchy News. Wright had been suspended with pay since Aug. 13 pending an investigation into possible misconduct with a student.

Law enforcement received a report Aug. 14 regarding “possible improper conduct by a teacher,” the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Monday.

“In the information provided to the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office, a parent had discovered social media communications between her child and a teacher which were inappropriate,” the Sheriff’s Office said.

Wright has worked for Iredell-Statesville Schools since 2012, according to a statement released by the school district.

She was a math teacher at North Iredell Middle School from 2012 to 2017, the district said. A faculty staff directory lists Wright as a high school math teacher at the Agriculture and Science Early College.

The alleged misconduct occurred between Oct. 1, 2019, and Aug. 12, 2020, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Wright was arrested Friday at the Iredell County Detention Center on felony charges of taking indecent liberties with a student, the Sheriff’s Office said. Her bail was set at $3,000.
