Violent home invasion ends with masked man shot — by his own grandfather, NC cops say
A 34-year-old man was fatally shot after he put on a mask and attempted to rob his grandfather, according to police in North Carolina.
The suspect, Jessie Dewayne Gibson, died April 20 at Carolinas Medical Center, the Long View Police Department said in a news release.
Gibson was shot around 8 a.m. April 15 on the west side of Long View, a small town about 45 miles northwest of Charlotte.
His grandfather, 76-year-old George William Gibson Sr., “suffered facial injuries” during the incident, police said.
A preliminary investigation revealed Jessie Gibson kicked in the front door of his grandfather’s home that morning, officials said.
“Gibson forcibly entered his grandfather’s residence with his entire face and head concealed with a piece of clothing,” police said.
“Once inside the residence, Jessie Gibson physically assaulted his grandfather, attempted to steal money and pointed a gun at him. As a result, Gibson Sr. shot his grandson during the incident.”
Jessie Gibson was hit multiple times and fled on foot and to a nearby motel, police said. He dropped his cell phone in the driveway of the home, and his mask was found in nearby woods, police said.
The victim told investigators he was not aware the suspect was his grandson during the incident, officials said.
“The investigation has revealed (Jessie) Gibson needed money to pay his rent,” police said.
Misty Mays of Long View told the Statesville Record & Landmark she saw Jessie Gibson and his girlfriend at Lowman’s Motel later that day and he “was bleeding pretty bad.” Mays said she is a friend of Gibson and he “was in the process of making changes in his life,” the news outlet said.
Investigators said George Gibson Sr. will not face charges in his grandson’s death “and his actions were justified.”
