North Carolinians are setting up their Thanksgiving feasts, and many can’t wait to finish with a slice of pie.

Pumpkin pie is the state’s favorite, but other flavors aren’t far behind on the list, a new survey finds.

The High Point University Poll said it surveyed 867 North Carolina adults to determine which pies they most want to eat during the holiday season.

In the survey, 22% of respondents chose pumpkin pie as their top choice. The flavor narrowly beat out apple and pecan pie, which were both the favorite for 18% of adults.

Here’s how popular other holiday pies were:

  • “Sweet Potato Pie – 14%

  • Chocolate Pie – 9%

  • Cherry Pie – 5%

  • Blueberry Pie – 4%

  • Peach Pie – 3%

  • Strawberry Pie – 2%

  • Other – 6%”

Pollsters said the survey had a “credibility interval of plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.” It was conducted online and via phone from Nov. 11-19 through a contract with Dynata.

“The data is weighted toward population estimates for age, gender, race/ethnicity, and education based on U.S. Census numbers for North Carolina,” the High Point University Poll said in results published Monday, Nov. 22.

If you’re craving a pumpkin pie without doing all the work in the kitchen, the version at Fresh Market beat out other store-bought slices in a 2015 Raleigh-area blind taste test. While pumpkin pie is one of the most identifiable Thanksgiving desserts, some other flavors let North Carolina traditions shine.

The state is the top producer of sweet potatoes, an ingredient used in pies across the region. Another favorite has been Atlantic Beach pie, a citrus treat with a cracker crust from Bill Smith of Crook’s Corner, a one-time Southern food staple in Chapel Hill, The News & Observer reported.
