Train shreds mobile home pulled across railroad tracks, North Carolina cops say

A mobile home was shredded when a train slammed into it in North Carolina, multiple news outlets reported.

The home was being towed when officials said the driver pulled it across railroad tracks early Tuesday, Jan. 11.

Video shows the structure was ripped apart after the impact, according to footage from WBTV, The Charlotte Observer’s media partner. The damage was reported near U.S. Highway 52 in Richfield, roughly 40 miles northeast of Charlotte.

Trooper A.C. McLester of the N.C. State Highway Patrol said no one was injured, and the truck driver hauling the mobile home faced an unsafe movement violation.

Officials said the driver crossed the tracks marked with a stop sign as the train was coming. The incident left an estimated $55,000 in damage to the new mobile home, which had left a nearby manufacturing center.

At railroad tracks, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration urges drivers to listen and look for trains.

The Stanly County Sheriff’s Office didn’t immediately respond to McClatchy News’ requests for information on Jan. 11.
