64-year-old driver dies after veering off icy road in North Carolina, cops say
A 64-year-old driver died after she ran off an icy road in North Carolina, officials said.
The woman was driving a Nissan SUV through Forsyth County when state troopers said she went across the center line on Monday, Feb. 7. The SUV then veered off the road and hit a tree, according to the N.C. State Highway Patrol.
The driver — identified as Irma Pozo — died at the scene of the crash. No one else was in the car.
Officials said it happened about 8 a.m. along Reynolda Road, also called N.C. Highway 67. The area is in Pfafftown, roughly 10 miles northwest of Winston-Salem.
The road that Pozo was traveling on was icy at the time of the crash, Trooper Ned Moultrie, a spokesperson for N.C. State Highway Patrol, told McClatchy News in a phone interview.
Across the region, police urged drivers to be cautious as multiple weather-related crashes and road closures were reported on Feb. 7. That morning, a winter weather advisory was in effect, and forecasters warned Triad residents of the potential for freezing rain.
“Expect a very light glaze of ice, mainly on the tops of trees, and on the highest elevated roadways,” the National Weather Service wrote in a graphic posted to Twitter.
The crash was still under investigation as of about 2:45 p.m., officials said.
