A 22-year-old driver died after he slammed into a tree along the Blue Ridge Parkway, officials said.

The man was driving through North Carolina when he “failed to negotiate a left-hand curve,” causing his car to veer off the road and hit a tree on Thursday, April 7, park rangers said in a news release.

The crash was reported at about 5:30 a.m. near mile marker 290. That’s in the Blowing Rock area and roughly 90 miles northeast of the tourist town of Asheville.

Park officials arrived at the crash site and found the only person inside the car had died. He was identified in the news release as Jonathan Gabriel Reyes Medrano of Mexico.

The Blue Ridge Parkway is a road that spans 469 miles through the mountains of Western North Carolina and Virginia.
