Car crashes into church on Easter Sunday and causes ‘major’ gas leak, NC officials say
A car slammed into a North Carolina church early on Easter Sunday and spurred a gas leak, officials said.
The car crashed into Second New Bethel Baptist Church on New Walkertown Road in Winston-Salem on April 17, the Winston-Salem Police Department told local outlet WFMY.
The Winston-Salem Fire Department tweeted just before 1:50 a.m. that it was on the scene of the crash. It posted a video that showed the sedan lodged against the building.
Police told WGHP that the driver of the car had non-life-threatening injuries.
Fire officials said the crash resulted in a “major gas leak,” shutting down the 1900 block of New Walkertown Road.
The fire department tweeted hours later, around 8:45 a.m., that the road was reopened.
The church posted on Facebook that its drive-in service planned for the day was canceled and asked for prayers for the driver of the car involved in the crash.
Officials had not released any additional details as of the afternoon of April 17.
Winston-Salem is about 100 miles west of Raleigh.
