It took a few days for Randy Boggs to wrap his head around the fact he won $100,000 in the North Carolina lottery.

“It really didn’t seem real,” Boggs, an Alexander resident and retired paramedic, told lottery officials. “I was kind of in denial for a couple days about it.”

Boggs bought his $30 Millionaire Maker scratch-off from the Citistop in Asheville, lottery officials said in a July 20 news release.

When he showed his wife, she couldn’t believe it either, according to the N.C. Education Lottery.

“She just kept looking at it,” Boggs told lottery officials, “but she finally came around.”

Boggs took home $71,019 after taxes, which he said would go toward paying bills and saving up.

“With us both on retirement this is going to help out a whole lot,” Boggs told lottery officials.

Alexander is about 140 miles northwest of Charlotte.
