A restaurant adds a Southern touch to its dishes — and serves the best brunches in North Carolina, a new report finds.

Savorez in Wilmington was named the state’s No. 1 place to get mid-morning meals, according to results published Monday, Sept. 19.

The review website Yelp created the list after studying places that offer breakfast and brunch. It “ranked those spots using a number of factors, including the total volume and ratings of reviews” over time, results show.

Savorez came out on top after several Yelp users raved about the restaurant’s customer service and brunch offerings, helping it to earn more than four out of five stars. Some were fans of the Breakfast of Champions, consisting of an arepa with fried chicken and chorizo gravy, among other toppings.

In addition to that dish, an online brunch menu shows meals ranging from biscuits and gravy to huevos rancheros. The restaurant said it puts its own stamp on dishes that are popular in Latin America.

“While sourcing locally and staying true to his North Carolinian roots, Chef Sam Cahoon has successfully honed his own style of cooking,” the restaurant wrote on its website. “His beautifully crafted cuisine is his southern take and tribute to Latin flavors.”

Savorez — which is open for brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays — said it serves food “booming with big bold flavors.” It turns out, the restaurant takes its name from “sabores,” which means flavors in Spanish.

It’s not the first time the downtown Wilmington eatery has been recognized.

In May 2021, it was one of two North Carolina restaurants that ranked among Yelp’s top brunch places in the nation. But more recently, Savorez missed out on a similar list from the restaurant reservation website OpenTable, McClatchy News reported.
