10-year-old among two killed in ‘tragic’ NC crash that left others injured, cops say

A 10-year-old is dead and a 4-year-old remains in critical condition after a car crash in North Carolina, cops say.
It happened just after 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25, when John Russell crossed the center double yellow line in his 2005 Ford and collided with a 2018 Chevrolet SUV near, Marion Police Department Chief of Police Allen Lawrence said in a news release.
Russell, a 53-year-old from Marion, was traveling east on Highway 70 near Old Highway 10 at the time of the incident, police say. The Chevrolet, which was carrying a driver and six passengers, was traveling west.
Russell, the only person in his car, died. A 10-year-old backseat passenger in the Chevrolet was also killed, according to police.
An adult passenger and 4-year-old passenger in the SUV remain in critical condition, police say. Three other juveniles were transported and treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Mission Hospital in Asheville.
“This is a tragic incident that has affected both families, and our thoughts and prayers are with all involved,” Lawrence said in the news release.
The Marion Police Department says it is investigating the crash and is working to determine what caused Russell to cross the line. Witnesses told police that he crossed the line at least three times before striking the SUV.
Toxicology testing is being conducted to determine if Russell was impaired, according to the release.
Marion is about 35 miles east of Asheville.
