A 44-year-old pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run accident, North Carolina officials say. The driver has not been located.

William Dave Guthrie Jr.’s body was spotted just before 4 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 8, by a passing driver near the intersection of Nine Foot Road and Cooper Lee Drive in Newport, according to a news release from Carteret County Sheriff’s Office.

He was found less than half a mile from his home.

Deputies said Guthrie left his home around 10 p.m on Nov. 7 to walk to a convenience store. While on his way, he was hit by a driver who fled the scene. Detectives are investigating the incident as a hit-and-run.

Local businesses and residents are asked to check their camera footage for any details about the crash, and anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers at (252) 726-INFO or the North Carolina State Highway Patrol at (252) 726-5766, deputies say.

Newport is about 90 miles northeast of Wilmington, North Carolina.
