Lottery win comes at ‘perfect time’ for NC man who just moved to take care of his dad
When Stacy Hege first learned he had won a $1 million North Carolina lottery prize, his response was, “yeah, right.”
But about a minute into the Thursday, Dec. 8, phone call from lottery officials, Hege, who is from Clemmons, started to believe it was the “real deal,” according to a recording from the North Carolina Education Lottery. He had won the top prize in the Colossal Cash second-chance drawing on Dec. 7.
“You’re going to give me a heart attack, buddy,” Hege said on the call.
After the phone call, the first thing Hege did was tell his dad, according to a news release from the lottery.
“When I told him, tears came to his eyes,” Hege told lottery officials.
Hege said he had recently moved so that he could help take care of his dad and that the “life-changing” prize will “just help us out so much,” according to the lottery release.
“This just comes at the perfect time,” he said.
Hege picked up his prize Friday, Dec. 9, and took home $426,060 after taxes. He told lottery officials he plans to use the money to buy a house. He also wants to take his dad on a fishing trip.
“I think it will do him some good,” he said.
Clemmons is in Forsyth County, about 115 miles west of Raleigh.
