North Carolina was the fourth most popular moving destination in the U.S. in 2022, according to a new report from U-Haul.

The Tarheel State jumped 15 spots from the previous year, the report shows.

The U-Haul report ranking is determined by the net gain of one-way U-Haul truck travel in a calendar year. Migration trends data is compiled from more than 2 million one-way U-Haul truck transactions that occur annually across the U.S. and Canada.

“The 2022 trends in migration followed very similar patterns to 2021 with Texas, Florida, the Carolinas and the Southwest continuing to see solid growth,” John “J.T.” Taylor, U-Haul International president, said in a statement. “While overall migration in 2021 was record-breaking, we continue to experience significant customer demand to move out of some geographic areas to destinations at the top of our growth list.”

Recently-released U.S. Census data also show that North Carolina’s population is growing at a rapid rate.

North Carolina’s population grew by 1.3% from July 1, 2021-July 1, 2022, making it the ninth fastest-growing state in the country, according to census data.

In terms of numeric growth, North Carolina came in at No. 3, gaining 133,088 residents during the same time period. Texas and Florida were the only states that saw larger increases in population.

While most of the state’s growth can be attributed to domestic migration, 26,000 residents came from other countries, The Charlotte Observer reported. That’s 16,000 more than the previous year.

International migration accounted for most of the country’s population growth in 2022, according to the census data. The U.S. grew by 1.26 million residents, with migration from abroad accounting for 80% of them.

Here are the 10 states people moved to most in 2022, according to U-Haul:

  1. Texas

  2. Florida

  3. South Carolina

  4. North Carolina

  5. Virginia

  6. Tennessee

  7. Arizona

  8. Georgia

  9. Ohio

  10. Idaho
