A 21-year-old died after her car ran off the road and slammed into a group of trees, North Caroline police say.

Stacie Luther was driving on the evening of Sunday, Jan. 22, when she passed a Randolph County deputy and hydroplaned across the road’s center line, according to police.

Luther regained control of the vehicle but continued to speed away from the deputy, the Randleman Police Department said in a Jan. 23 news release. The deputy then turned on his lights and siren and tried to stop Luther.

While driving away from the deputy, Luther lost control of the vehicle again, police said. She ran off the road to the left and hit a group of trees. The impact of the collision sent one of the tires flying, striking another vehicle.

No one was injured in the second vehicle. Luther was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say speed and weather contributed to the wreck, and the investigation is ongoing.

Luther is remembered by friends and family as a “sweet soul.”

“There is no way this is real,” one friend wrote on Facebook. “I love you.”

“The most soft spoken sweetest person,” another friend posted. “Gone entirely too soon.”

“I can’t believe this,” a third friend wrote.

Randleman is about 90 miles northeast of Charlotte.
