North Carolina

If you used TurboTax seven years ago, you might be owed money. Here’s how much

If you filed your taxes through TurboTax, you could get a portion of a $141 million settlement.

Attorney General Josh Stein announced that 150,000 North Carolina residents who were deceived into paying for what otherwise should have been free tax services by TurboTax will get $4.5 million of the settlement.

This is part of a 2022 multi-state settlement when Stein and attorney generals from across the country reached an agreement with TurboTax for misleading people into paying for tax services that should have been provided at no cost. About 4.4 million people nationwide will be compensated.

“I’m pleased that more than 150,000 North Carolinians will get back the money they were tricked into paying when they filed their taxes,” Stein said in a statement. “My office will hold accountable businesses when they deceive people to make money.”

Who is eligible for TurboTax settlement payments?

The settlement applies to those who paid Intuit to file their federal tax returns through TurboTax for the years 2016, 2017, and 2018 though they were eligible for the IRS Free File Program. Eligible taxpayers do not need to file a claim and will be notified by email from the settlement fund administrator.

How much money will taxpayers get?

Most people are expected to receive between $29 and $30. Checks will be mailed throughout May. You can find more information about the settlement and who is covered at www.AGTurboTaxSettlement.com.

How to make sure your check is valid

You can verify to make sure your mailed check is valid on the settlement website. All you need to do is enter your Claimant ID Number and check number on the payment verification page.
