A 23-year-old driver died and her passenger was hospitalized in critical condition after her car veered off a road in the North Carolina mountains, overturned and smashed into a house Saturday morning, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

The driver, Abigale Victoria Henderson of Ararat, Virginia, died at the scene on Glade Valley Road in Alleghany County, Trooper Christopher Casey said in a news release.

A medical helicopter flew her passenger to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, Casey said. The Highway Patrol hasn’t released the passenger’s name.

No one in the home was hurt, Casey said.

Reckless driving may have contributed to the crash, the initial investigation showed, according to the trooper.

Henderson veered off the road while southbound near N.C. 18 about 5:30 a.m., he said.
