Still waiting on your NC tax refund? Here’s when to expect it — and why it could be delayed
Nearly 21 million people in the U.S. have already received their federal tax refunds, but North Carolina residents are still waiting on money from the state.
That’s because the state just started processing returns.
According to the N.C. Department of Revenue, the state will begin processing returns and issuing refunds in March.
Here’s how to check the status of your N.C. refund, why your refund could be delayed and why your refund could be different than expected.
How can I check the status of my refund?
You can use the state’s Where’s My Refund application to check the status of your refund when NCDOR begins processing returns.
To see your refund’s status, select “Check the status of your 2023 original income tax refund,” then enter your Social Security number and refund amount.
Why is my refund delayed?
Here are some common reasons why your tax refund could be delayed, according to NCDOR:
There was a math error on your return, or another adjustment needs to be made
You used more than one form type to complete your return
Your return was missing information or incomplete
Your return was selected for additional review
Why is my refund different than I expected?
If your refund is different than you expected, it means NCDOR may have made an adjustment to your return.
If that happens, you should receive a Notice of Adjustment explaining the change and your new refund amount, NCDOR says.
