A Powerball player just missed a $174 million jackpot — but still won big in North Carolina.

The person bought a ticket that matched all but one number picked in the Aug. 5 drawing, making it worth $50,000, according to the N.C. Education Lottery and Powerball websites.

The winning numbers: white balls 29-42-44-51-54, with red Powerball 12.

The lucky ticket, which matched four white balls and the red ball, was sold near Charlotte. It came from the QuikTrip gas station on River Highway in Mooresville, a roughly 25-mile drive north from uptown Charlotte, an N.C. Education Lottery spokesperson told McClatchy News via email.

The player’s ticket was one number from winning the jackpot, which stood at an estimated $174 million. No one hit the jackpot, but a $1 million winner from Iowa scored the largest prize the night of the drawing, McClatchy News reported.

As of 10 a.m. Aug. 6, officials said no one had come forward to claim the $50,000 North Carolina prize. The state gives winners about six months to cash in on prizes in drawing games.

“Check your tickets!” lottery officials wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

What to know about Powerball

To score the jackpot in the Powerball, a player must match all five white balls and the red Powerball.

The odds of scoring the jackpot prize are 1 in 292,201,338.

Tickets can be bought on the day of the drawing, but sales times and price vary by state.

Drawings are broadcast Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:59 p.m. ET and can be streamed online.

Powerball is played in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
