A shy cat spent more than 400 days waiting in a North Carolina shelter — then came good news.

Percy got a “confident” companion, and the two were adopted into the same home, according to the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society.

“They actually didn’t come in together, however, their adopter wanted two,” shelter manager Kaitlyn Moss Villarreal told McClatchy News in an Aug. 28 email. “Being that Percy was pretty submissive, we thought they would make a good pair!”

Percy and Winter are starting their next chapter after they both spent more than a year in the shelter, according to social media posts.

Percy, who waited 461 days for a home, arrived as a kitten after he and his litter mates were found under a house. He was known for being timid but became affectionate once he got comfortable around people.

“Percy is a great example of what happens a lot during the influx of kittens,” Villarreal wrote. “The shy ones often times get over looked until they become adult cats.”

Meanwhile, Winter was known for her “sassy” and “confident” personality. She was in the shelter for 573 days after a good Samaritan rescued her on a cold day.

“We actually let her be an office cat for a while, until she kept running out the door everytime it opened and we were spending too much time chasing her down,” Villarreal wrote. “She longed to be outdoors!”

Then, after becoming long-term shelter residents, Winter and Percy finally were adopted. A photo shared on Facebook shows them loaded into a car as they got a fresh start with their new mom and sister.

“It is always bittersweet when we adopt any animal out because of course we love them and wish we could keep them forever,” Villarreal wrote. “But it also makes us so happy that they are finding forever homes.”

The humane society is in the Sapphire area, a roughly 55-mile drive southwest from the popular mountain town of Asheville.
