A mama dog with a broken leg was determined to protect her puppies — and now, six of them need new homes.

“These pups had a rough start to life, but are safe and loved now and looking for forever homes,” the Triangle Beagle Rescue of North Carolina wrote Sept. 3 on Facebook. “Because they are not full beagles, they have ZERO adoption interest.”

The overlooked pups are ready for their next chapter after their mother, Salted Caramel, was committed to raising them. She was found with a serious leg injury after being hit by a car.

“Even through her pain, there was something remarkable about this beagle mix mom,” the Raleigh-area rescue wrote in a blog post. “Her eyes held a quiet determination as she hovered protectively over her seven little puppies.... Salted Caramel’s love for her puppies never wavered. Every day, she put their needs above her own, bravely enduring her pain to make sure her little ones were safe, warm, and fed.”

The little ones, now 8 to 10 weeks old, made it to the Triangle Beagle Rescue. The animal organization shared an adorable video of the pups eating ice cream, a nod to their frozen treat-themed names: Butter Pecan, Chocolate Chip, Cookies and Cream, Cotton Candy, Mint Chip, Rocky Road and Tutti Frutti.

As of Sept. 4, only Butter Pecan had gotten a new owner. All seven siblings have been described as the “perfect mix of sweetness, bravery, and love,” rescuers wrote in an online post and an email to McClatchy News.

“They are lively, curious, and ready to explore the world around them,” the animal organization wrote. “They have the spirit of adventure and joy that momma has instilled in them, and they’re eager to find their forever families.”

Meanwhile, their mom is described as having a “spirit as strong as her name is sweet.” She is now recovering from a leg surgery and could be available for adoption in late October.

“She is super sweet, happy and loving, despite a 10” healing incision, activity restrictions, and a body that still wants to nurse her already-weaned pups,” foster parent Jeanne Latshaw told McClatchy News in an email.

More details about the rescue’s adoption process can be found at tribeagles.org.
