Powerball player just misses jackpot — but still wins big in NC. Where was ticket sold?
A Powerball player just missed a $337 million jackpot — but still scored a huge prize in North Carolina.
The player bought a ticket that matched all but one number picked in the Oct. 9 drawing. Since the person spent an extra dollar on the Power Play option, their $50,000 prize tripled to $150,000, the N.C. Education Lottery told McClatchy News in an email.
The winning numbers: white balls 25-32-43-53-66, with red Powerball 10.
The lucky $3 ticket, which matched four white balls and the red ball, was sold in Jackson County. It came from the Catamount Travel Center in Whittier, a roughly 60-mile drive southwest from the mountain town of Asheville.
While the Powerball player is set to get much richer, their ticket was one number from scoring the larger jackpot prize. No one hit the jackpot, which stood at an estimated $337 million the night of the drawing, according to the Powerball website.
In North Carolina, winners have about six months to claim their prizes. Lottery officials shared details about the $150,000 win early Oct. 10, before the lucky ticket holder would have had a chance to cash in.
What to know about Powerball
To score the jackpot in the Powerball, a player must match all five white balls and the red Powerball.
The odds of scoring the jackpot prize are 1 in 292,201,338.
Tickets can be bought on the day of the drawing, but sales times and price vary by state.
Drawings are broadcast Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:59 p.m. ET and can be streamed online.
Powerball is played in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
