Don’t let his ‘grumpy’ face fool you — shelter dog has ‘gentle’ soul. He needs a home
A dog has a mean-looking face — but don’t let that fool you.
Despite Tommy’s intimidating looks, he’s actually a “shy, gentle” dog, according to a North Carolina animal shelter.
“We hope that his grumpy cat impersonation will strike someone’s fancy or catch the eye of someone looking for a sweet boy who needs a home,” Lake Norman Humane wrote Jan. 16 in a Facebook post. “Tommy is timid and would love a quiet environment to learn how to trust people and open up in.”
Tommy is waiting for a second chance after he was found as a stray in the Charlotte area. As he was being transferred from a Cabarrus County shelter, a worker at Lake Norman Humane couldn’t help but notice his appearance.
“When I went to pull him from Cabarrus, I was obsessed with how smushy his little face was,” Taylor Sedlatschek, animal intake coordinator, told McClatchy News in an email. “We promise though, he is not as grumpy as he may look.”
Photos posted on social media show Tommy with a frown and cold stare on his face. The shelter said his “grumpy mug” is a permanent fixture that has stolen hearts on social media.
“He’s definitely falling into the ‘pocket pitty’ category at around 40 lbs and his short stature just adds to his cuteness,” the shelter wrote.
An online adoption profile describes Tommy as a 2-year-old mixed-breed pup. He can be shy when meeting new people but doesn’t take much time to build trust, especially if treats are around.
“He LOVES to play with other dogs,” Sedlatschek wrote. “They bring him out of his shell and help him gain confidence. He is also a foodie who loves a good treat.”
As of Jan. 21, Tommy was available for adoption at the shelter in Mooresville, a roughly 25-mile drive north from Charlotte. Details about the facility’s adoption process can be found at lakenormanhumane.org.
