A lottery player spent $2 on a ticket — and won a life-changing prize in North Carolina.

The player tried their luck on Multiplier Mania, a progressive jackpot game. The person hit the jackpot March 15, making their online ticket worth more than $1.1 million, the N.C. Education Lottery wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Multiplier Mania is a Digital Instant game that offers tickets starting at 50 cents. To win the top prize, a player must match several digital icons, according to the lottery’s website.

Lottery officials don’t know where Digital Instant players are when they buy their lucky tickets. But they know the Multiplier Mania winner is from Taylorsville, a roughly 60-mile drive northwest from Charlotte, a spokesperson told McClatchy News via email.

As of about 10 a.m. March 17, no one had claimed the $1,166,489 prize. Winners have about six months to cash in, according to game rules.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
