Dog once at risk of being put down gets new home — with another ‘underdog’
A dog once at risk of being put down got a new home — with another pup who needed a second chance.
“Our team was thrilled,” Samantha Ranlet, spokesperson for a North Carolina animal shelter, told McClatchy News in an April 4 email. “It’s very rare to have someone come in looking to adopt two unrelated dogs together — let alone two senior ‘underdogs’ like Breezy and Sebastian.”
The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) of Wake County shared the heartwarming news after a woman fell for both older pups. Their new owner, identified only as Skyler, had previously adopted a dog with special needs.
“When she called recently to let us know Dwayne had passed away, it was hard news to hear,” Ranlet wrote. “But she let us know right away that she wanted to come save another underdog life in memory of Dwayne.”
Now, in honor of the late pup, dogs Breezy and Sebastian are starting their next chapter together.
The Raleigh-area SPCA said Breezy had been rescued from a “crowded local shelter where she was at risk of being euthanized.” Then at the SPCA, the roughly 8-year-old pup spent months being overlooked as adopters sought younger dogs.
“She loves to play and bounce around,” Ranlet wrote. “Nobody told Breezy her muzzle was graying! She loves to run, sunbathe, and get belly rubs. She’s allergic to rain (emotionally speaking). She’d rather bask in the sun like an upside-down frog.”
Meanwhile, Sebastian soaks up attention but is known for being cautious.
“Like Breezy, Sebastian was also transferred into our care from one of the many NC shelters we partner with to help alleviate space-related euthanasia,” Ranlet wrote. “Sebastian’s owner had to move and could not take him along, so at 9 years old, Sebastian found himself single and needing a new family.”
Then one day, Breezy and Sebastian caught Skyler’s eye. She couldn’t decide which one to adopt, so she gave the two pups a fresh start.
“Now, because of Skyler’s huge heart and Dwayne’s legacy of love, both Sebastian and Breezy finally have a place to call home,” the shelter wrote April 3 on Facebook. “We hope this wonderful adoption warms your hearts as much as it does ours.”
