Morehead Manor Bed and Breakfast in Durham was not far behind, leading The Historic Magnolia House in Greensboro, results show. They ranked No. 2 and No. 5, respectively.

“If you’re looking to experience the charm and hospitality of a destination, staying at a bed-and-breakfast can be a great idea,” 10Best editors wrote. “They offer a more intimate setting, where guests can get to know the hosts as well as other travelers.”

Each bed-and-breakfast was nominated by an expert panel of editors, after which readers were invited to vote for their favorites over a four-week period, according to the website. 10Best did not say how many votes were cast.

Travelers in search of cozy, quiet lodging can find some of the best right here in the Tar Heel State.

C.W. Worth House Bed & Breakfast

Built in 1893, C.W. Worth House remains a top pick among travelers planning a stay in historic Wilmington, earning it a Traveler’s Choice Award from Tripadvisor.

The Queen Anne-style inn has seven rooms where guests are treated to an array of amenities from personalized service to a “complimentary wine hour,” the hotel’s website says. It’s nestled in Wilmington’s Historic District and is within walking distance to local shops.

“Guests of C.W. Worth House enjoy a farm-to-table breakfast each morning, and the property is close enough to downtown and the Wilmington Riverwalk that you can walk to many restaurants and attractions,” according to 10Best.

Travelers rated it 4.9 out of five stars, noting its comfortable rooms, charming atmosphere and attentive staff, according to Tripadvisor:

“The home has so much character from the moment you pass through the gate,” one visitor wrote. “Each of the rooms (common areas and bedrooms) are beautifully appointed and there are wonderful touches on every floor.”

Another guest gushed over the breakfast, calling it “delicious and generous.”

“The hosts were most hospitable and accommodating, and a nice bonus was getting a chance to chat with them at the included ‘happy hour’ get together,” another visitor said of their recent stay.

Morehead Manor Bed and Breakfast

Before it was a guest house, Morehead Manor was once home to the CEO of the Liggett and Myers tobacco company, according to its website.

A sprawling 8,000-square-foot property, it now bills itself as a “one-of-a-kind” respite for travelers. Guests are invited to stay in one of five bedrooms, each with its own private bathroom, its website says.

“Gourmet breakfast and all-day snacks and beverages are included, but no pets or children younger than 12 are permitted — unless your party books the entire manor — in order to maintain the inn’s serene atmosphere,” according to 10Best.

The “splendidly” decked out Colonial Revival-style mansion is a short walk from the area’s downtown, making it easy for guests to explore local attractions.

Other featured amenities include luxury bed linens, free high-speed wi-fi and 24-hour coffee service, according to its website.

In addition to lodging, Morehead Manor hosts weddings, conferences, luncheons and other private events.

The Historic Magnolia House

Guests of The Historic Magnolia House can expect Southern hospitality during their stay at the four-room inn and restaurant.

The bed-and-breakfast offered safe lodging to Black travelers during segregation and was featured in The Negro Motorist Green Book, a traveler’s guide to businesses that were safe for African-Americans, its website says.

“Music legends including Tina Turner, James Brown, and Ray Charles have stayed at The Historic Magnolia House, and the property’s four guest rooms feature decor inspired by past guests,” according to 10Best.

Guests can enjoy amenities including free wi-fi, a sitting area and luxury robes, the hotel’s website says.

Nearby attractions include the First National Bank Field and International Civil Rights Center and Museum in downtown Greensboro.
