North Carolina

Trains to Carolina Panthers games are back this fall. Here’s how to catch one.

If you’re planning to see the Carolina Panthers play in Charlotte this fall, you might consider taking the train.

Amtrak and the N.C. Department of Transportation are tweaking the morning schedule for the Piedmont train on seven Sundays when the Panthers play. The change means two westbound trains from the Triangle will be scheduled to arrive by noon, in time for fans to get to their seats in Bank of America Stadium for a 1 p.m. kickoff.

Two evening trains will take fans home after the game, the last one scheduled to arrive in Raleigh about 11 p.m.

Who the Panthers play on train days

The football trains will take fans to the following games:

  • Sept. 21 against the Atlanta Falcons
  • Oct. 5 against the Miami Dolphins
  • Oct. 12 against the Dallas Cowboys
  • Oct. 26 against the Buffalo Bills
  • Nov. 9 against the New Orleans Saints
  • Nov. 30 against the Los Angeles Rams
  • Dec. 21 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

When the trains run

Fans going to Charlotte on the morning of the game have two options:

▪ Piedmont train 71, departs Raleigh Union Station at 6:30 a.m. and stops in Cary, Durham, Greensboro and Kannapolis before arriving in Charlotte at 9:28 a.m.

▪ Piedmont train 73 leaves Raleigh at 8:40 a.m. and stops at Cary, Durham, Burlington, Greensboro, High Point, Salisbury and Kannapolis before arriving at noon. Train 73 normally departs Raleigh at 10 a.m.

Fans also have two options coming home after the game:

▪ Piedmont train 76 leaves Charlotte at 5 p.m. with stops in Kannapolis, Greensboro, Durham and Cary before arriving in Raleigh at 8 p.m.

▪ Piedmont train 78 departs Charlotte at 7:45 p.m. and stops in Salisbury, High Point, Greensboro, Burlington, Durham and Cary before arriving in Raleigh at 10:52 p.m.

Ticket prices vary by the length of your trip. Tickets from Raleigh, the most expensive, start at $58 round-trip, though there are discounts available for some riders.

Be aware that Charlotte’s Amtrak station is about 2 miles from Bank of America Stadium, so you’ll need to take a cab or rideshare or walk across four lanes of North Tryon Street to catch a Charlotte Area Transportation System or CATS bus to get there. NCDOT and the city of Charlotte are building a new train station near the heart of uptown, but it won’t be ready for years,
