Grandma taking a break from work buys lottery ticket. Prize leaves her ‘stunned’

A grandmother bought a lottery ticket on her break from work — and hit the jackpot.

“This is really going to come in handy,” prize winner Nora Huntley told the North Carolina Education Lottery. “It’s a blessing.”

Huntley, who has 15 grandchildren, hopes to share money with her family after winning $200,000.

But when she first looked at her ticket, she skipped over some zeroes.

“I saw a two and zero so I thought I won $20,” she told lottery officials in an Oct. 16 news release. “I was stunned.”

Huntley won big at the Marathon Food Center in Polkton, a roughly 45-mile drive southeast from uptown Charlotte. She works at the store and tried her luck while on break .

It turns out, her $5 ticket won a top prize in the 5 Times Lucky scratch-off game. She kept $143,501 after taxes.

“I just got lucky,” said Huntley, who lives in Polkton.

It’s not the first time a lottery player has been mistaken. Another North Carolina winner thought her ticket was worth $250, but she was missing a few zeroes, McClatchy News reported in December.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
