A dog adopted seven years ago keeps returning to a shelter — and now, she waits for the right home.

“It is, naturally, hard for us because we do love her,” a North Carolina animal shelter told McClatchy News in an Oct. 16 email. “She is a very affectionate dog who deserves a good home.”

Eloise is up for adoption after she first landed at the Yancey County Humane Society in 2018. At the time, she was found as a stray puppy and matched with an owner.

“We had assumed she was faring well until she arrived as a stray in 2024,” the shelter wrote in a Facebook post. “Upon contacting her owner of record, we discovered she had been given away to family members who no longer wanted her.”

She was adopted again, but she came back in July “due to difficulties in containing her. She does have a wandering heart! Following another brief adoption, she was returned after a month due to chewing things in her home,” according to the humane society.

Now, the shelter in Burnsville — a roughly 35-mile drive northeast from the mountain town of Asheville — hopes Eloise’s next home will be the right fit.

“To fulfill her needs, a prospective owner must provide a secure yard or have extensive land for exploration,” the shelter wrote. “Furthermore, an abundance of chew toys and a sturdy crate for when she is left alone are essential. In return, she will offer unwavering love and devotion.”

Eloise is described as a 7-year-old, mixed-breed dog who “embodies pure affection” when she’s near people. She also enjoys being around water and other pups, according to an online adoption profile.

As of Oct. 17, the shelter’s website still listed Eloise among the dogs in need of homes. Details about the animal organization’s adoption process can be found at yanceyhumanesociety.org.

“She loves nothing more than to be petted and will just lean into you when you do,” the shelter wrote.
