A 1-year-old girl remains in critical condition after being pulled from the site of a deadly fire, according to police in North Carolina.

A critically injured woman was also found in the home, but she has since died of fire-related injuries, Fayetteville police said in a news release. The woman has been identified as 35-year-old Porsha Quarles, police said.

The fire was reported around 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 29, at an apartment in the 6400 block of Yadkin Road.

“First responders observed visible fire coming from the apartment. Fayetteville Fire Department personnel made entry and removed two occupants,” police said.

“Both occupants were transported by EMS to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. Tragically, one of the occupants has succumbed to their injuries.”

The origin and cause of the fire are under investigation. Foul play is not suspected, police said.

The woman and child were residents of the apartment, but details of their relationship have not been released, officials said.

Fayetteville is about a 65-mile drive southeast from downtown Raleigh.
