A 911 call reporting a dog attack turned into a daring rescue, after an animal control officer discovered a man being mauled by a “dangerous” dog, North Carolina investigators say.

The incident happened just after noon Tuesday, Jan. 20, on Springwood Road in Asheboro, and another dog was also attacked at the scene, police said.

“ACO B. Harper arrived on scene and observed a man with a dog on top of him. ... Harper bravely intervened and was able to detain the dog without harm,” Asheboro police said in a Facebook post. “Harper also obtained medical help for the man due to bite injuries.”

Details of how Harper brought the dog under control were not released.

An incident report notes a 64-year-old woman called 911 to report “a man was being mauled by a dog” in the backyard.

“Upon arrival, ACO Harper located two women in the driveway of the residence who advised their dog had been attacked,” the report says.

In the backyard, “Harper saw a gentleman on the ground with a dog on top of him. ACO Harper also noticed a small brown in color bulldog covered in blood next to the residence.”

Investigators did not release details of the man’s condition, or the fate of the dog.

Maps show Springwood Road is a residential street and the single family homes are abutted by forest land.

Asheboro is about an 85-mile drive northeast from uptown Charlotte.
