A student athlete remains hospitalized after being struck by a vehicle during track practice at a rural high school in eastern North Carolina, officials say.

It happened Tuesday, March 3, in the unincorporated Barco community, and the identity of the student has not been released.

“This evening, a student was struck by a vehicle at Currituck County High School during track practice. Emergency personnel responded immediately, and the student was transported to the hospital,” the Currituck County Schools said in a news release.

“Out of respect for those involved and due to the ongoing investigation of the incident, we are unable to share additional details at this time.”

The student’s condition and details of the crash have not been released.

The incident involved a “CCHS track student,” according to a social media post by Currituck County Middle School.

“Additional support personnel” were sent to the high school and middle school on Wednesday to help students and staff distressed by the incident, officials said.

“We recognize that some of our athletes — and other students — may be struggling emotionally ... as they process what happened,” the middle school wrote in a Facebook post.

The school has an enrollment of 1,041 in grades 9-12, according to U.S. News & World Report.

Barco is about a 180-mile drive northeast from downtown Raleigh.
