Emergency crews searched Saturday night for a swimmer who went underwater near a popular rock face on a lake in the North Carolina mountains and never resurfaced.

At 7 p.m., crews were “actively searching” an area west of the Duke Energy water intake at Linville Dam on Lake James, according to Burke County Emergency Services. The dam is one of three that created the boating and fishing lake in the early 1900s.

Multiple callers reported seeing a person enter the water, officials said.

“The individual has not been seen since, prompting a large-scale response from local emergency agencies,” officials with Burke County Emergency Services said on social media.

Searchers urged drivers and boaters to avoid the area.

This is a developing story that will be updated.
