A body has been discovered one day after a swimmer vanished in North Carolina’s Currituck Sound, searchers say.

The identity of the male has not been released.

He vanished in the sound around 7:20 p.m. Friday near Aydlett, about a 190-mile drive northwest from downtown Raleigh.

“Currituck County Communications received a 911 call in reference to a male who had gone under while swimming near the Poplar Branch Boat Ramp and had not resurfaced,” the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office said in a June 20 Facebook post.

“In a combined effort with the downscan sonar capabilities of the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office and the towable sonar capabilities of the Bunyan Fire Department, the body of the missing swimmer was located and recovered at approximately 9:30 (Saturday) morning.”

An investigation has been launched into what caused the swimmer’s death, officials said.

Poplar Branch Boat Ramp is on the mainland, west of the Corolla Island section of the northern Outer Banks.
