Coroner identifies woman killed in crash on Lexington road that hurt another driver

One driver was killed and another was hospitalized following a Saturday night crash in Lexington, South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

The two-vehicle collision happened at about 10 p.m. at the intersection of Boiling Springs Road and Longview Street, Lance Cpl. Matt Southern said. The Christmas at Heart quilt shop is at that intersection.

The driver of a 1998 Toyota Camry was heading east on Longview and disregarded a stop sign when turning left on to Boiling Springs Road, according to Southern.

After missing the sign, the Toyota smashed into a 2008 Jeep Commander heading south on Boiling Springs, Southern said.

The driver of the Toyota was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene of the wreck, Highway Patrol reported.

That driver was identified as Doris Smith Waters, a 63-year-old Leesville resident, Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said in a news release.

The person driving the Jeep was wearing a seat belt and suffered injuries in the crash and was taken to an area hospital, Southern said.

Information on the Jeep driver’s condition was not available.

No other injuries were reported.

The collision is still under investigation by Highway Patrol.

A month into 2020, 49 people have died on South Carolina roads, according to the Department of Public Safety. Of those deaths, 36 of the victims had access to seat belts, and 24 were not wearing safety restraints, DPS said.
