The death of a soldier from the South Carolina National Guard is under investigation, the Department of Defense said Thursday.

1st Lt. Trevarius Ravon Bowman died Tuesday at Bagram Air Force Base in Afghanistan, U.S. officials said in a news release from the Pentagon.

The 25-year-old Spartanburg native died from “a non-combat-related incident,” which is under investigation, according to the release.

Further information on the circumstances of Bowman’s death were not available.

Pentagon officials said Bowman was assigned to Company B, 198th Signal Battalion, 261st Signal Brigade, out of Newberry. That unit is attached to the 228th Theater Tactical Signal Brigade, in the South Carolina National Guard.

Bowman was serving in Afghanistan as part of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel, according to the release.

“It is with heavy hearts and deepest condolences that we announce the passing of 1LT Trevarius Bowman,” said Major General Van McCarty, who serves as head of the Military Department of the state of South Carolina. “This is never an outcome we as soldiers, leaders, and family members wish to experience. Please keep the service members in his unit in your thoughts and prayers, as well as his family as they work through this difficult time.”

The National Defense Service Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Army Achievement Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and Afghanistan Campaign Medal are among the awards Bowman received, Army spokeswoman Capt. Jessica Donnelly told The State.

The Pentagon reported there have been four non-combat deaths in Afghanistan among U.S. troops in 2020, as well as four deaths caused by hostile forces, according to Army Times.
