Heavy rain sparks flash floods across South Carolina as warnings continue Thursday

Already soggy conditions could worsen in South Carolina as the potential for more rain prompted weather officials to extend flood warnings across the state Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

Several northwest counties, including Greenville and Spartanburg, remain under the threat of severe weather as a slow-moving system brings heavy rain to much of the Southeast, forecasts show.

A flash flood watch for Greeneville stretched into Thursday morning after storms moved through the area overnight. Social media videos shared by the city’s government Wednesday evening showed the Reedy River violently overflowing its banks.

The wet weather could worsen Thursday, as the weather service for Greenville-Spartanburg says scattered thunderstorms are possible throughout the region.

“Any storm that develops will have cloud to ground lightning and heavy downpours, and could have wind gusts that would be capable of knocking down trees weakened by the heavy rain and saturated soils,” the agency said.

Eastern parts of the Palmetto State are also under a severe weather watch.

Thunderstorms are expected across the region Friday, the weather service said. Flood warnings along rivers will remain in place until May 22.
