Dog who ‘loved everything life had to offer’ gets touching obituary in South Carolina
A South Carolina pet owner wrote a touching tribute to her “constant companion,” who died of cancer earlier this month.
Sallie Hammett wrote an obituary that honored Charlie, her Golden Retriever that recently died. Hammett took to Twitter to share a photo of the obituary, and the post has garnered more than 100,000 reactions since Tuesday.
“Charlie’s favorite activities were walking, stick collecting, swimming, smiling, and snoozing,” she wrote. “If we’re being honest, Charlie loved everything life had to offer (except stairs. He hated stairs).”
Some of the social media users who commented on the tweet expressed their condolences and praised the tribute to Charlie’s life.
“So sorry you had to say goodbye,” one person wrote. “Dogs are unconditional love wrapped in fur.”
Another person commented: “Legit cried at this. Sending love.”
“The response to this has been so overwhelming in the best way,” Hammett wrote on Twitter. “Thank you all for loving Charlie and for sharing all your doggos (keep em coming).”
Hammett, of Greenville, adopted her “beloved” pet seven years ago, The Greenville News reported. Over the years, Charlie ran after squirrels, went on car rides and greeted his owner with kisses, according to the obituary.
“He was her constant companion,” the tribute said. “There through heartache, moves, grief, and joy. He was good at a lot of things, but he was best at unconditional love.”
That love was shared with many, including Hammett’s now-husband, HuffPost reported.
“When I saw David interact with Charlie I just knew he was the one, because he loved Charlie as much as I did,” Hammett told HuffPost.
Charlie died in Sept. 13, five months into fighting cancer, news outlets reported. As Charlie’s life was nearing its end, the family took him to his favorite spot: the beach.
“He relaxed in the Charlie-sized holes he dug himself, and dove straight into the oncoming waves,” the obituary said. “His last days were so happy and will be cherished forever.”
Instead of giving flowers, Hammett asked people to offer their own dogs “some extra love in honor of Charlie.”
