A 53-year-old moped rider was killed after striking a deer on a South Carolina road, officials said.

The person was thrown off the moped during the crash on Sunday, Jan. 9, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Officials said it was just after midnight when the moped was traveling on Holland Ford Road, south of downtown Greenville. The rider hit a deer and landed on the roadway, Cpl. Joe Hovis said in a news release.

The rider — identified in news reports as Clyde Babb — died at the site of the crash. Babb was from the nearby town of Piedmont, WHNS reported and WSPA reported.

State troopers said the moped rider wasn’t wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The Greenville County Coroner’s Office didn’t immediately respond to McClatchy News’ request for information on Jan. 10.
