17-year-old high school student dies in head-on car crash, South Carolina police say
A 17-year-old high school student was killed in a car crash, South Carolina state troopers said.
St. Joseph Catholic School senior Emily Gushue was driving along East Standing Spring Road near Simpsonville at 10:24 p.m. March 29 when she veered into the opposite lane, troopers told WSPA.
Gushue was driving a 2015 Honda and crossed the center lane, hitting an oncoming driver head-on, according to WSPA.
Gushue was pronounced dead from blunt force trauma at the scene of the crash, which happened just days before her 18th birthday on April 8, according to WYFF. She was wearing a seat belt when she crashed, the station reported.
Gushue’s high school released a statement shortly after her death, WHNS reported.
“Emily was a beloved member of the school community and everything we aspire for our students to become. Emily was an honor student who loved the cello, theatre and being a captain of the softball team. She was involved with Campus Ministry and was a Kairos Retreat leader,” the school’s headmaster Keith Kiser wrote in the statement. “On behalf of all of the students, teachers and staff at St. Joseph’s, we extend our deepest sympathies to Emily’s family and promises of continued prayers and support. Emily will always be part of the St. Joseph’s community.”
The other driver involved in the crash was taken to Prisma Health Greenville Memorial, troopers told WSPA.
McClatchy News reached out to the South Carolina Highway Patrol for comment and did not receive an immediate response.
