Tourists can’t get enough of one vacation hot spot in South Carolina, helping it earn national recognition.

Charleston ranks No. 8 on a list of travel destinations that people love to visit, according to results published Wednesday, Jan. 18.

To create the list, the travel website Tripadvisor studied comments that vacationers left from November 2021 to October 2022. While examining several categories, the website said it considered the “quality and quantity of ratings and reviews” about “accommodations, restaurants, and things to do” across the country.

On the list of favorite destinations, Charleston was the only place in South Carolina to land in the top 10. Tripadvisor recognized the city for its historic setting and waterfront scenery.

“Charleston is bursting with Southern charm and hospitality,” Tripadvisor wrote in its report, which gave nods to Waterfront Park and other local landmarks.

The honor might not come as a surprise, as Charleston often ranks among the best of the best. Last year, Tripadvisor named it one of the nation’s up-and-coming travel destinations.

Since then, Charleston also ranked among the most breathtaking places in the world and a top city to visit in the fall. Within the city, several restaurants have made it onto national lists, McClatchy News reported.

In the latest Tripadvisor rankings, Charleston not only made it onto the list of favorite places to visit. The city also was No. 2 in a separate category that measured the nation’s best places for food lovers.
