Stunning estate for sale withstood war and colonial fires in SC. Peek at history

A historic — and sturdy — opportunity has landed on the real estate market in Charleston, South Carolina: An estate that was built in 1718 managed to take on both mother nature and man and survived to tell the tale.

It’s listed for $2.95 million.

“A significant historic house that has accommodated and been owned by noteworthy Charlestonians since its construction, circa 1718, this building is one of the oldest surviving houses in the city,” a news release from Maison Real Estate says. “It has witnessed several colonial fires in the neighborhood, shelling during the Civil War, the Earthquake of 1886, and several hurricanes. The masonry building weathered it all and survived to become part of the original historic district of Charleston.”

The jaw-dropping three-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom has been renovated “and transformed” and awaits a new owner and generation.

“Known as one of the most photographed homes in the city, it has been featured twice in Southern Living Magazine and also in the movie ‘The Patriot,’” the listing says, referring to the 2000 film starring Mel Gibson. “This home sits in an ideal South of Broad location, walkable to many of the Peninsula’s award winning restaurants, galleries, shops, and historic monuments.”

Features in and around the 2,394-square-foot home include:

  • Private back patio

  • Laundry room

  • Fireplaces

  • Guest suite

  • Hardwood floors

The listing is held by Mary Lou Wertz.
