UPDATE: A 32-year-old woman, identified as the aunt of the twins who were shot, was arrested April 28 and charged with five counts of unlawful conduct toward a child, unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and other drug-related charges, the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office said in an April 29 news release. McClatchy News is not naming the woman to protect the identities of the 5-year-old victims.

A 5-year-old girl was shot and killed when gunfire rang out at a South Carolina home, authorities said. The girl’s twin was also shot and critically injured.
Deputies responded to the shooting at about 5:30 p.m. April 25 in Greenville, Sheriff Hobart Lewis said in a news conference.
There they learned that several people had been shooting at each other, striking the twins and an 18-year-old in the arm, authorities said.
A Greenville County Coroner’s Office report said the 5-year-old who was killed “received at least one fatal gunshot wound.”
Lewis said the other twin was taken to the hospital but “unlikely” to survive. The 18-year-old is expected to be released, he said.
“This is so senseless,” Lewis said. “This shouldn’t occur in Greenville County, certainly shouldn’t involve these young children.”
A 31-year-old woman, identified as Shawnteza La Shay Sherman, was arrested and charged with murder, two counts of attempted murder and criminal conspiracy in the shooting, deputies said in an April 26 news release.
A juvenile was also arrested and charged with possessing a firearm, deputies said.
Later that morning, a 16-year-old was charged with murder, two counts of attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime in the shooting, according to a release.
The investigation is ongoing, deputies said.
Greenville is about a 104-mile drive southwest from Charlotte, North Carolina.
