No swimming in Lake Wylie after wastewater overflow; crews testing bacteria level

Swimmers are being told to stay out of Lake Wylie while Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services workers collect and test water samples for bacteria after a wastewater spill, a news release from the agency said.

An estimated 123 gallons of wastewater overflow near 11007 Lochmere Road in Charlotte reached Lake Wylie on Sunday, the news release said.

“Most homes along the lakes are served by low pressure sewer systems that convey waste to a gravity fed sewer to our wastewater treatment plants,” the release said. “A pipe failure caused the overflow.”

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services staff alerted residents nearby about the overflow on Monday after confirming it made it to the lake.

The advisory will be lifted after samples show bacteria below action level, the news release said.
