South Carolina will debut a new license tag early next year, colored with the state flag’s indigo blue and topped with the state motto, “While I breathe, I hope.”

The tag will replace the 8-year-old sunrise design, criticized by some for having what appeared to be Clemson University’s school colors of orange and purple. South Carolina began redesigning its license tags last year with the state’s 170 specialty plates switching to the same simple, white-based template.

Car owners will get the new standard plates when it is time for them to renew their tags, which happens every two years.
