Newberry County school superintendent killed in wreck

Newberry County’s school superintendent died Saturday in a wreck that involved a car driven by a sheriff’s deputy.

County Coroner Craig Newton identified the victim as 56-year-old Bennie Bennett of Prosperity, who had been school superintendent for 10 years.

The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, which happened on S.C. 219 near Newberry High School.

Highway Patrol said the deputy, who had been responding to a call, was hospitalized with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.
