It could feel like 110 degrees in North Carolina on Tuesday. When will we see relief?
Scorching temperatures and high humidity made for another miserable afternoon in North Carolina, where it felt like at least 110 degrees in some places.
The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning Tuesday for Harnett, Johnston and other counties east and south of the Triangle. The heat index in those areas could reach 110, making for “dangerously hot conditions,” forecasters say.
Heat advisories were issued near the coast and in other parts of the state, stretching from Charlotte to Raleigh, according to forecasters. In those places, it could feel like it’s more than 100 degrees, officials say.
The two alerts are in effect until 9 p.m. near the Triangle and expire at 8 p.m. in several other areas.
Before 3 p.m., the heat index value reached 112 at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, the National Weather Service said on Twitter.
In the Greensboro and Raleigh areas, “the oppressive heat and humidity will fuel strong to severe thunderstorms,” the forecasters wrote in a separate tweet. Isolated flooding and strong winds are possible from 2 to 9 p.m., a map shows.
Severe weather is also predicted for western and northeastern North Carolina, forecasters say.
During the extreme heat, the National Weather Service advises everyone to “drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.”
Officials also encourage people to consider rescheduling outdoor activities and to wear loose clothing if they must spend time in the heat.
The triple-digit heat index is expected to stick around “through at least Thursday,” the Raleigh office of the National Weather Service tweeted Monday. High temperatures could be in the 90s until at least early next week, according to an extended forecast for the Triangle.
In Raleigh, the high temperature on July 21 is normally 90 degrees, according to data through 2010. The record high was 102 degrees, set in 2011.
