Charlotte sees rain, severe storm threat from Hurricane Laura
The remnants of Hurricane Laura brought showers and an ongoing threat of severe storms to the Charlotte region Saturday morning.
Laura’s remnants are expected to leave the region by early afternoon, when skies should turn sunny, with a high of 87 degrees, according to the National Weather Service’s 7 a.m. forecast for Charlotte.
For Saturday morning, “a few T-storms could be strong w/ damaging wind, although a weak/brief tornado can’t be ruled out,” NWS meteorologists based in Greer, S.C. tweeted at about 6:45 a.m.
“Brief heavy downpours, gusty winds, and close to ground lightning will be the primary threats,” NWS forecasters said in a hazardous weather outlook bulletin at 5:14 a.m. “One or two storms could become strong to severe with damaging wind gusts.
“The storms should move to the east by the early part of the afternoon.”
At least 14 people have died due to former Hurricane Laura, including 10 in Louisiana and four in Texas, CBS News reported.
Tropical Depression Laura was a Category 4 hurricane when it made landfall early Thursday. Photos show damaged buildings and flooded streets as the storm ripped through Louisiana and Texas, McClatchy News reported.
