Rain, cold weather in store for Charlotte on Monday

If temperatures in Charlotte overnight Sunday and early Monday morning stay mostly above freezing, the metro area will likely avoid any wintry mix. Instead, the forecast calls for rain.

On Sunday, the National Weather Service issued an alert saying parts of the Charlotte region could see sleet, freezing rain and even some snowflakes.

But unlike winter weather experienced in recent weeks, any wintry mix is expected to be light, meteorologists in the NWS office in Greer, S.C., said in their hazardous weather outlook bulletin.

“Little to no ice or snow accumulation is expected before precipitation changes over to a light cold rain by around midday Monday,” according to the bulletin.

According to local weather forecasts from both WBTV and WSOC TV stations, metro Charlotte will likely see only rain, with the threat of ice more so in areas north of Charlotte.

The NWS over the weekend issued a hazardous weather alert for Mecklenburg and 10 surrounding counties, including York in South Carolina.

The NWS predicts a high of only 44 degrees in Charlotte Monday, while the rest of the week should be sunny with warmer temperatures.

Highs are predicted to climb to 52 Tuesday, 57 Wednesday, 59 Thursday, 58 Friday and 60 Saturday, according to the NWS office.

Monday’s wet weather would follow an expected all-sunshine weekend.

Sunday will remain cold, with a forecast high of only 46 degrees. That would be a degree higher than Saturday’s high in Charlotte, according to the NWS.

Past winter weather

Last weekend, a blizzard in the Northeast canceled 150 flights at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

Only 0.2 inches fell in Charlotte last weekend, as temperatures warmer than expected spared the area the full brunt of a storm, the Observer previously reported.

Last weekend’s storm dumped up to 7 inches of snow and left thousands without power in the N.C. mountains, the Observer reported.

That storm system followed others that brought snow or ice to Charlotte the previous two weekends.

Charlotte broke a 39-year-old record when 1.9 inches of snow fell on Jan. 21, the National Weather Service reported.
