7,000 without power in Charlotte area after fierce storms Wednesday, Duke Energy says
Fierce storms left at least 7,500 Charlotte-area homeowners without power Wednesday night, Duke Energy reported.
About 4,500 customers in Mecklenburg County and 2,100 in Iredell County had no power at 7:30 p.m., according to the Duke Energy outage map.
Homes lost power as a line of thunderstorms barreled through the region about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service office in Greer, South Carolina.
Trees toppled onto a home in Mooresville, WBTV reported. No one was injured, according to the station.
Mecklenburg County homeowners may not see power restored until about 3:15 a.m. Thursday, according to Duke Energy.
Iredell County homeowners could see power restored by 11 p.m. Wednesday, Duke Energy reported.
More storms are expected in the Charlotte area Wednesday night and are anticipated again on Friday, according to an NWS alert about 4:45 p.m. Wednesday.
Storms late Wednesday “could become severe and produce brief damaging winds and large hail,” according to the alert.
“Scattered to numerous thunderstorms may develop Friday afternoon into Friday evening as a cold front crosses the region,” NWS meteorologists added in the alert. “A few storms may become strong to severe, with large hail and damaging winds being the main threats.”
